28th Sunday of Year C

Today’s Gospel about the ten lepers who were cured by Jesus alerts us to the constant need to give thanks to the Lord.  Only one of the ten lepers come to thank Jesus and he was a foreigner.  Thanking and praising God is a sign of our faith.  So many blessings we receive in everyday life we take for granted.  The Mass is the greatest act of thanksgiving but we need to find time each day to thank God for all the little things that happen in our life for our benefit.

Canonization of Blessed John Henry Newman

Today in Rome Blessed John Henry Newman is being canonized a saint by Pope Francis.  Cardinal Newman, born in London in 1801 became an Anglican clergyman but converted to become a Catholic.  He set up an Oratory in Birmingham and wrote many books and articles about the faith.  He showed great care for the poor, so much so that when he died in 1890, thousands of people lined the streets of Birmingham to say farewell and pray for this holy man.  Westminster Diocese  is marking the occasion by having Solemn Vespers in Westminster Cathedral on Saturday at 3.30pm at  which the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby will preach.  Everyone is invited to this occasion.  Please note that as I am attending this, I may be late getting back  for confessions at 5.30.

World Mission Sunday

Next Sunday is World Mission Sunday, when the Holy Father invites all Catholics to contribute to a special collection for Missio, his charity for world mission.  Please support Mission in helping missionaries to work alongside communities throughout the world that are poor or in need, regardless of their background or belief.  Join in on this special day, that unites Catholics all over the world in prayer and celebration of our Church’s mission to share God’s love with all creation— ‘Together we are Mission’.  You will be able to Gift Aid your donations by using envelopes provided by Missio.  For more information , visit mission.org.uk.  Thank you.
