Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Year A
Christian Life Flows from Gratitude
As the ancient Israelites moved from slavery in Egypt to the promised land, the Lord reminded them of his faithfulness in the past and then his promises, and said, “You have seen how I carried you on eagle’s wings and brought you to myself…… if you obey…. you shall be mine….a kingdom of priests, a consecrated people”.
This is because God’s people’s obedience was to flow, first from gratitude. Likewise, when we reflect on God’s faithfulness to us in the past, our hearts are moved to serve with joy and hope.
Thus, St Paul in this Sunday’s second reading reminds us that we were helpless when Christ died for us. He calls this a proof of God’s love, and says, Jesus, having died for us, is it likely that he would now fail to save us?
God’s goodness in the past should bear in us an unfailing hope and trust. But, how often do we remember God’s goodness towards us? It is through this remembrance that our gratitude and hope come alive, and our faith becomes personal, making us joyful and authentic witnesses.
Thus, a Christian witness not rooted in gratitude to God lacks the love needed to heal the harassed, dejected and the lost to whom we are sent as we heard in this Sunday’s Gospel (Matthew 9:36-10:8). Therefore, we pray that the Lord may fill us with gratitude for His goodness, strengthen our hope, and make us fruitful witnesses of Christ. Amen.
Happy Sunday Fr. Chinedu
