SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A

God’s Patient Mercy

This Sunday’s readings show us that God manifests his power not through force, but through mercy and patience. The Book of Wisdom reminds us that although God is sovereign over all, he remains gentle and shows his strength by being merciful. God’s justice is never apart from his compassion. The Psalm proclaims, “God is kind and forgiving, slow to anger and rich in mercy.”

Jesus illustrates this divine patience in the parable of the wheat and the weeds.  Rather than uproot the weeds immediately, the master waits until the harvest, lest the wheat be harmed. God sees both the good he has planted in us and the      weaknesses that still need healing. He does not give up on us or rush to fix us.     Instead, he patiently works within us, allowing grace to transform us over time.

The same is true about the Church, a community of saints and sinners journeying together. We come to God with our strengths, wounds, and struggles. The Lord  patiently purifies us, often over a lifetime. God does this through the Holy Spirit, who helps us in our weakness, when we cannot help ourselves (Romans 8:26-27)

Today’s Gospel invites us to imitate God’s patient love by being merciful and patient with each other and with ourselves, resisting the temptation to judge harshly or despair over our imperfections. God is still working in us. In God’s time, the unwanted will give way; then we will see that we had not waited in vain. Lord, teach us your patient love.

After the Mass, all are welcome to the church hall for a thanksgiving celebration  and refreshments.

If you wish to make an offering on behalf of the parish, please  place your gift into the brown envelope marked Silver Jubilee.  Your envelope can be placed in the      offertory collection  bag or  posted  through the presbytery letterbox.

BANNEUX ND GB PILGRIMAGES 2026

Bannneux ND GB Pilgrimages invite you to join our pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Banneux, Belgium, a major Catholic Marian pilgrimage site. It marks the spot where the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared eight times between January 15 and March 2, 1933, to an 11-year-old girl, Mariette Beco, calling herself the "Virgin of the Poor". 

During the visions, Mary indicated a stream, stating, "This spring is reserved for all nations to relieve the sick". The shrine was officially approved by the Roman Catholic Church in 1949 and was famously visited by Pope John Paul II in 1985.

We will be travelling by luxury coach on the 12 August and returning on the 18 August.
