Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C

God’s Salvation is for all People

The readings of this Sunday remind us that God’s plan for our salvation is for all people. Thus, the prophet Isaiah declares: “I come to gather nations of every language.” Our God is not exclusive; his love reaches every corner of the earth.

But this gift of salvation requires a response from us as the Lord gently leads us through spiritual disciplines that are often very difficult. St Paul, in this Sunday's second reading, encourages us not to give up but to understand that all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the fruits of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. While we may not see how God may be using our sufferings today for our good, we should, however, stay faithful to the process.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus doesn’t answer the question “How many will be saved?” Instead, He teaches us how to be saved and said, “Strive to enter through the narrow door.” That narrow door is the way of humility, forgiveness, endurance, sacrifice, and truth, even when it costs us so much. It is the way Jesus himself walked and entered into glory. He now invites us to follow his Way.

We are called to a prayerful patience with constancy, committing to the process of divine training which prepares us for the eternal glory offered to all people. O Lord, help us by your grace. Amen.

Happy Sunday Fr. Chinedu
