“The Prayer That Pierces the Heavens”
Last Sunday’s readings invited us to persevere in prayer. This Sunday, we are invited to add humility to our perseverance, for the eyes of the Lord are drawn to the humble (Isaiah 66). The first reading (Sirach 35:12-14, 16–19) says, “The prayer of the humble pierces the clouds…the Lord will not delay on their behalf.” The reading reminds us that God is impartial and a righteous judge, as St. Paul calls him in the second reading (2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18). All are equal before God in whom the humble obtain mercy.
Christian prayer should flow from humility, an acknowledgement of our need for God, who makes our good works meritorious. We approach God based on who He is. The Pharisee’s prayer in this Sunday’s Gospel was not acceptable to God because he approached God not based on who God is, the Merciful, but on his own merits. He congratulated himself for fasting, tithing, and praying. His prayer did not rise beyond his pride and sense of entitlement. He had forgotten that without grace, ‘our righteousness is like filthy rags’ (Isaiah 64:6).
Like the tax collector in the Gospel, we are to clothe ourselves with humility, acknowledging that we are sinners in need of God’s mercy. When we approach God in this way, our lowly, poor hearts are exalted, our prayers are heard, and we will obtain mercy.
Happy Sunday
