RCDOW Burnt Oak

17th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B

God’s Grace and the Human Limitations

By Grace, human limitations can be instruments for a higher purpose. When we submit our limited strength or resources to God, the principle of divine sustenance kicks in to release the grace of completion.

In this Sunday’s first reading (2 Kings 4:42:44), a man brought to Prophet Elisha twenty barley loaves and fresh grain in the ear but wondered how those could feed hundreds of people. He focused on the smallness of his offerings and missed the vision of God’s vastness.  Prophet Elisha, however, believed in the divine transformative power of grace and said, "They shall eat and have some leftovers". They ate and had some leftovers.

In today's Gospel, Jesus takes and prays over the five loaves and two fish a boy had offered. He handed them out to be shared among thousands. The disciples could not see how that could happen.

But this was a test probably to teach them to place their little in God’s hands so that the Grace of divine sustenance could kick in. When grace is involved, little can be enough, the end of our strength can be the beginning of an experience of a divine power and sustenance.

May the Lord take all our limitations, and bless them with his divine sustenance.  When our limitations are in God’s hands, divine sufficiency becomes ours. Amen
