Jesus Triumphantly Enters Jerusalem...
Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, the most sacred time in the Church’s year. Jesus triumphantly enters Jerusalem. As we carry palms and join the procession, we symbolically follow Christ to Calvary, uniting ourselves with his passion in the hope of sharing in his resurrection.
In this Sunday’s Gospel, we hear Jesus being mocked because he couldn’t save himself from being consumed by his love for us. “He saved others; he cannot save himself”, they said. But Jesus says that “All this has taken place that the Scriptures might be fulfilled.”
His entry on a donkey fulfils Zechariah's (9:9) prophecy, “Rejoice daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king comes to you; victorious and riding on a donkey…” Our king arrives humbly to suffer for our sake. Shockingly, the crowd that welcomed Jesus with hosannas will soon cry, “Crucify him!” This stark contrast reminds us of the weakness of the human heart, capable of both praise and betrayal.
In humility, Jesus accepts suffering for our sake. “He emptied himself and submitted to death on a cross…..but God raised him high”, as St. Paul tells us in his letter to the Philippians.
As we begin this Holy Week, we walk with Jesus, carrying our crosses and laying down, for him, our lives, and not mere palm branches.
Lord, may this week renew our gratitude and trust in the truth that sufferings, borne with God, lead to Easter Glory. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.
Happy Holy Week.
