Fourth Sunday of Lent Year C 2025
Laetare Sunday—Rejoice in the Lord!
This Sunday, Laetare Sunday, we are invited to rejoice as it marks a joyful milestone in our Lenten Journey. Joyfully, we also celebrate our mothers and mother figures on this Mother’s Day. We do so within the context of the hope and victory of Easter, which now draws nearer. The rose-coloured vestments symbolize this joyful mood, as the light of Christ gently breaks through our penitential season.
The entrance antiphon of this Sunday’s Mass declares, “Rejoice...be joyful, all who were in mourning!” This joy should flow from a deep sense of gratitude for what Christ has already accomplished in our lives by reconciling us to God. Having been reconciled then, St. Paul reminds us that we have been given the ministry of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:17-21)
In this Sunday’s first reading from Joshua 5:9-12, Israel celebrates the Passover in the Promised Land, remembering God’s faithfulness and mercy. Similarly, we remember and prepare to celebrate Christ’s ultimate Passover, foreshadowed in the ancient Israelites’ Passover.
The Gospel from Luke 15:11-32 presents God’s boundless mercy in the parable of the prodigal son to remind us that, no matter how far we may stray or have strayed, our Eternal Father eagerly awaits our return. His mercy reaches out to us, calling us to repentance.
As we journey towards Easter, may we rejoice in God’s grace, seek reconciliation, and embrace the freedom of being God’s beloved Children. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen. Happy Mother’s Day
