CORPUS CHRISTI 2026

Corpus Christi: A Gift, a Promise, and a Test of Faith

This Sunday is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, a mystery that is a gift, a promise, and a test of true discipleship. Before this mystery, human reason and sense fail us. But then faith summons us to recognise the Real Presence of Christ, hidden beneath this veil concealed.

In John 6, Jesus declares: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven.” When many were scandalised by his words, Jesus did not soften His teaching for people’s approval. Instead, Jesus reaffirmed that his flesh and blood are true food and drink by which we share in his life. St Paul reminds us of this in this Sunday’s second reading, saying, “The cup of blessing that we bless is a participation in the blood of Christ, and the bread that we break is a participation in the body of Christ” (1 Corinthians 10:16).

Like those who first heard Jesus, we too are invited to choose whether to trust His word or not. Having believed in Jesus’ word, we unite our voices with St Peter’s response in this Sunday’s Gospel saying, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life” (John 6:68).

In the Eucharist, Jesus promises that whoever eats His flesh and drinks His blood has eternal life. Confident in Jesus’ words, may the Lord renew our love and faith in Christ’s abiding presence in the Eucharist. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Happy Sunday   Fr. Chinedu
