TAKEHOMENEWS SUNDAY 8 NOVEMBER 2026

With Wisdom We Patiently Wait.
This Sunday’s readings invite us to be ready and to wait in prayer with wisdom for the divine visitation. Since we need wisdom for Christian waiting, today’s first reading invites us to incline our ears to divine wisdom, which reveals herself to anyone who seeks her with a pure heart. (Wisdom 1:4). Jesus is God’s Wisdom (Corinthians 1:24), for whom our souls are thirsting as today’s responsorial psalm prays.
As we slowly approach the end of the Church's liturgical year and gently advance towards Advent, we are to remember that Jesus is the Wisdom who comes and whom we readily await. It is by inclining our hearts to God’s word that we await him and emulate the five virgins who, in today’s Gospel, took their lamps with enough oil in the flask for their waiting.
The image of oil symbolises God’s anointing, seal, power, and the Holy Spirit, whose presence we nourish and yield to through prayer, charitable works and by inclining our hearts to God’s words. We may not know the hour of our divine visitation. But having known God’s love, which has loved us so patiently, with patient endurance and confident hope, we await his coming. May the Lord help us to incline our hearts to Wisdom so that we may learn to patiently await and thus recognise our time of divine visitation when and in whatever way it presents. We make our prayers through Christ our Lord. Amen

So who is the service for?
Anyone who has either personally lost a baby at any stage of pregnancy, at birth, or in early years, or who has been affected by family members' or friends' loss. Whether the loss was recent or 80 years ago, everyone is welcome to attend. We have also extended the services, and gladly welcome anyone who is grieving the fact that they haven't had children. This may be due to circumstance, infertility, or for other reasons - but all are welcome. Babies and children are also invited to come with their families, as the Saying Goodbye service is truly a family event for all. To read more on the charity, please see the Saying Goodbye website, which you can find at: www.sayinggoodbye.org
