SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER year C 2025

Jesus Prays for Christian Unity

In this Sunday’s Gospel (John 17), Jesus prays for us and shows that Christian unity is the fertile soil where divine glory takes root. In this high priestly prayer, Jesus presents us to the Father (see Hebrews 8:3) and intercedes for us (Hebrews 7:25-26; John 11:42).

Firstly, Jesus prays for us to be one because true holiness and authentic   witness can emerge only in united hearts. Unity reveals Christ alive to the world and secures the Church’s future by healing divisions.

Secondly, this unity, born of prayer and the Spirit, brings about authentic evangelisation beginning from our homes. Without unity, our witnessing lacks the power to convince and change lives (Acts 1:14; 1 Cor 1:10).

Thirdly, Jesus prays that we may see and share fully his glory (John 17:24), that glory which we already behold in part and await its full revelation in us. (John 1:14; 2 Cor 3:18). Like Stephen (Acts 7:55-60), may we behold Christ’s glory and find strength to love and forgive.

Yes, unity comes with crosses and trials.  But the glory to come far outweighs our present trials.  Hence, Jesus says, “I am coming soon with my reward” (Rev 22:12).

Lord, send your Holy Spirit, the Spirit of unity and love, that we may be one and so reveal your glory to the world. Through Christ our Lord. Amen

Happy Sunday Fr Chinedu.
