Solemnity of Christ the King 2025
Solemnity of Christ the King 2025

Jesus, King of My Heart?

The Feast of Christ the King marks the end of the Church’s liturgical year and prepares us for a new beginning in Advent, a season of great expectation. It reminds us that the One we will be waiting for during Advent in preparation for Christmas is a King. But unlike the kings of this world, Jesus is the King of kings, yet a servant King who reveals his power through humility: born in a manger, he gave his life on the cross for his people.

Jesus’ kingship exposes the limitations of worldly kingship. His is the kingship before which every authority will render an account. Jesus’ kingship fulfils God’s promise to David of an everlasting kingdom. Unlike any earthly kingdom, which is temporal and often marked by injustice, Jesus’ kingship is eternal, of peace, love, truth, service, and justice. It is everything our world longs for but cannot achieve on its own without God.

Jesus is the King whose birth we prepare to celebrate at Christmas. As we will now begin this coming Sunday to prepare for his Advent, this feast invites us to carefully reflect on and perhaps ask ourselves:  If I proclaim Jesus as King, is he truly the King of my heart?

Do I allow his Kingdom-principles of love, peace, justice, and fairness, to guide and shape my choices, my relationships and my life today?

Happy Sunday

Fr. Chinedu
