Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year C) 2025

God’s Boundless Mercy

God’s mercy is infinite, new every morning, and can never be exhausted by our need for it.

In today’s first reading (Genesis 18:20-32), Abraham intercedes for Sodom and Gomorrah, asking God to spare the cities if fifty righteous people are found. Fearing there might not be fifty, Abraham boldly asks for 45, then 40, 30, 20, and finally 10. Each time, God responds: “Yes, I will spare the city.” But Abraham stops at ten, perhaps afraid of appearing too demanding. What if he had asked for five, or even one? He didn’t exhaust God’s mercy; he simply stopped asking, just as we often do, assuming there’s a limit to God's mercy, thus projecting our human limits onto God.

But God’s mercy cannot be stretched too far for a heart that sincerely seeks Him. As the Psalmist declares, “Your love, O Lord, is eternal.” Even if our sins are as heavy as those of Sodom, God’s mercy is greater still, ready and waiting for our return.

Jesus’s intercession far surpasses Abraham’s and is able to save completely those who draw near to God through Him (Hebrews 7:25). In this Sunday’s Gospel (Luke 11), Jesus urges us to persist in prayer, asking, seeking, knocking. God is never offended by our return. He desires sincere hearts that trust and do not give up on His mercy. Keep asking. God’s mercy always outweighs our asking.

Lord, may we always embrace your mercy with a repentant heart. Christ our Lord. Amen. Happy Sunday
