Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B
Obedience to God: An Expression of Our Love.
Obedience to God is our response to his love and a sign of our coming to life.
Moses reminds God’s People of this truth in this Sunday’s first reading from Deuteronomy and gives them the Shema. “Listen, Israel: The Lord our God is the One Lord. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength. Let these words…..be written on your hearts”. Interestingly, this is also the life of every Christian. We are called to love the Lord with every fibre of our being. Hence, this Sunday’s psalm declares, “I love you, Lord, my strength… you are worthy of all praise”.
In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus quotes the Shema as the first commandment. But then he added the second and said, “You must love your neighbour as yourself. In this way, Jesus shows that our love of God, expressed through our obedience to his word, is made concrete and alive when extended to our neighbour through our love for them. It is, however, in loving God through obedience to his words (John 14:15) that we learn to love our neighbour correctly. Lord Jesus, as we, by your grace, strive to obey your word, teach us to love our neighbours with the same love that we have received from you, Our Ideal High Priest. Amen
