My Indifference Counts

Last Sunday, the dishonest steward was called to account for his stewardship. This Sunday, the Lord denounces the complacent rich who care only for       themselves and were indifferent to others’ needs (Amos 6:1, 4-7).

This Sunday’s Gospel (Luke 16:19-31) tells us how a rich man lived in luxury but was blind to the need of the poor Lazarus at his gate. Due to his indifference to the pains of others in whom Christ suffers, he missed the promised eternal blessedness. Our indifference to the pains of others can deprive us of divine  encounter with God, who shared in our humanity.

Riches without a generous heart is simply spiritual poverty and a life void of eternal promise. Through love we store up treasures in heaven. (Mtt 6:19-21)

There are many people this very moment, who, like Lazarus, lay at our very gates, streets, churches, shopping malls etc. It is easier to share and pray with our likes and those who make us comfortable. But the saving sacrificial love often lies not in our comfortable spaces, but often in our deliberate and close attention to the uncomfortable wounds and needs of others.

Only God’s grace can sustain us in those uncomfortable terrains of charity as we fight the good fight of faith” (1 Timothy 6:11-16 ) anticipating the eternal     blessedness.  Happy Sunday   Fr. Chinedu
