TAKEHOMENEWS SUNDAY 14 SEPTEMBER
- RCDOW Burnt Oak

How could they boast in and call ‘holy’ the cross, an instrument of torture (see Galatians 6:14, 1 Corinthians 1:18)?
This Sunday’s liturgy reminds us that God placed the salvation of the human race on the wood of the cross, so that, where death arose (Genesis 3:5-7), life might again spring forth, so that curse and shame might give way to blessings and glory. As in dying on the cross, Christ manifested the power of our exaltation (Philippians 2:6-11), even so shall our crosses carried in faith lead to glory as we fix our gaze upon him.
Exalted by the Father and lifted through the cross (John 3:14-15), Jesus is the one upon whom we must fix our gaze at all times, just as God’s people did to the bronze serpent in this Sunday's first reading (Numbers 21) and were saved.
Exalting the Cross is not glorifying suffering, but a glorification of Christ who triumphed through it. Our world seeks to erase the Cross, but we are called to bear its mark with courage, declaring its salvific power over our lives, relationships and families, knowing that crosses carried with faithful patience will lead to eternal glory.
Happy Sunday

Please come and join us for the third session of our Synod study programme. We are reading and reflecting on the Final Document of the Synod and trying to discover what it could mean for the parishes in our Barnet Deanery.
We are meeting on Saturday 20th September from 2.00pm-4.00pm in the hall of the Canon Smyth Parish Centre. The Annunciation Church, 4 Thirleby Rd, Burnt Oak, HA8 0HQ.
In this third session (don’t worry if you missed the previous ones) we will be considering Part III of the document which focusses on Discernment within the Church, and decision-making processes.
As in previous sessions we will be asking the following questions:
1.) What stands out to me in this chapter?
2.) What are the strengths in my parish in living, forming and nurturing relationships between men and women, in the family, in the local community, among social groups, religions and the whole of creation?
3.) What developments would I like to see in my parish in this area?
