TAKEHOMENEWS SUNDAY 22 SEPTEMBER 2024

TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B

The Lord upholds our lives.

The wicked scheme against the virtuous, but the Lord upholds the upright.

In this Sunday’s First Reading (Wisdom 2:12,17-20), the wicked plot against the virtuous to bring them to a shameful end simply because the uprightness of the righteous makes them uncomfortable. Rather than repent, they plot against the innocent.

Faithfulness to God exposes ungodliness for what it truly is. We see this in Jesus whose life exposed the works of darkness. (John 1: 5). He was plotted against and crucified. However, it was all according to God’s redemptive plan as Jesus tells us in this Sunday’s Gospel (Mk 9:30-37), “The Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men, they will put him to death.” But here is the Good News. Jesus’ death did not end in shame as the ungodly wanted and thought. It ended in glory. Even so, will all who suffer because of their faithfulness be sustained and glorified.

Many might be the sufferings of the righteous, especially as we try to maintain the bond of peace among us as St James’ tells us in the second reading (James 3:16-4:3), but the Lord delivers them (Psalm 37;13-19). In all our sufferings, the Lord upholds us. Lord, through your Spirit, uphold us so that we may not be shamed. Amen
