Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Year C 2025

Humility: A Foundational Kingdom Principle.

True humility fascinates. Yes, it is a gift, but it can be acquired through practice. Humility flows from profound knowledge of who we truly are. But this knowledge proves itself when we choose not to cling to that which we are, simply for the sake of Charity.

This Sunday’s first reading (Sirach 3) reminds us: “The greater you are, the more you must humble yourself.” True greatness is about lowering ourselves for the sake of love. That’s why, Jesus himself, though equal with God, emptied himself and became obedient, even unto death on a cross. But God exalted him above all. Jesus knew he was God in               everything, yet he lived as though he was not.

You see, pride is often a sign of ignorance. When we know who we are, unconditionally loved as sons and daughters of God, there is no need to seek false heights or cling to ego. Instead, we bend in gratitude to lift others.

In today’s Gospel (Luke 14:1, 7-14), Jesus shows that the path to God’s banquet is humility. Over-blotted with ego, the proud cannot squeeze through the narrow door to the heavenly banquet, which Hebrews 12 calls “The assembly of firstborn enrolled in heaven”. Humility is not weakness. It expresses the depth of our knowledge and is the soil in which all other virtues flourish. If we humble ourselves before God, he will exalt us in his time. O Lord, help us by your grace. Amen

Happy Sunday
