The Lord is Our Rescuer

The Lord is Our Faithful Rescuer and our present and faithful help in times of need.  Thus, the responsorial psalm of this Sunday confesses, “I waited, I waited for the Lord, and he stooped down to me. He heard my cry and drew me from the deadly pit from the miry clay ...”. In faithfulness to his promises, God will always deliver his own, outsmarting the crafty in their wickedness (Psalm 64)

In today’s first reading from Jeremiah 38:4-6,8-10, we read how the wicked conspired against the Prophet Jeremiah and got him thrown into the cistern and abandoned him to die.

But our God thwarted the plots of Jeremiah's adversaries and saved him.

To follow Christ may sometimes mean suffering. But the Lord delivers us (Ps 34:19). Jesus, in this Sunday’s Gospel, Luke 12:49-53, speaks of these challenges, which our faithfulness to him will bring. But amid all that, he promises a peace that the world cannot give.

To avoid growing faint-hearted, this Sunday’s second reading from Hebrews 12:1-4 invites us to fix our gaze on Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, setting our hearts on the joy that was set before Jesus, which strengthened him to endure the cross. However, it is only by the fire of God’s love, which Jesus came to cast on earth and enkindle in our hearts, that we are sustained.   We therefore pray for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit into our hearts that we may patiently endure to the very end.  Amen

Happy Sunday Fr. Chinedu
