Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year C

“Vanity of Vanities, All is Vanity”

These words from Ecclesiastes 1:2 remind us that everything passes,     including our precious earthly lives. Without God, everything loses   meaning; even our achievements become empty. This Sunday’s readings challenge us to see life through the lens of faith and not be enslaved by God’s gifts.

True wisdom tells us that fulfilment lies beyond the material world. Thus, the Gospel (Luke 12:13–21) presents a rich man who hoards his wealth but forgets God, neighbour, and eternity. Jesus calls him a fool, because he trusted in wealth for security rather than in God, the Giver of wealth.

Therefore, St. Paul (Colossians 3:1-11) urges us to fix our hearts on things above, not on what perishes. Jesus himself tells us to be watchful and guard against greed, since life’s worth is not in possessions, but in God.

When we forget that everything is a gift, we begin to worship the gifts instead of the Giver. Our possessions should serve us, not enslave us. We should not let God’s blessings distract us from the ultimate Gift of     knowing Christ.

Only in God can we find true freedom from the tyranny of materialism. By staying rooted in prayer and the Word of God, we learn the true value of things. Let us fix our gaze on Christ, that our hearts may remain open to the eternal and not lost in the darkness of passing things. Lord, help us by your grace.

Happy Sunday
